I have winME. The previous versions of JCreator up to 3.50.009LE worked fine.
Now with 3.50.011LE, I'm having serious trouble. I can start the program, tweak the settings and even create a new java file ok. But when I start the actual editing, JCreator stops functioning properly. I can usually write this much "public class blaa {} + a line feed" fine, but then something happens and JCreator stops responding correctly. As I type, nothing is output onto the screen, as if JCreator takes every input character as an empty space. So e.g. instead of an "a", I get " ". The cursor also leaves marks (i.e. "copies" itself on the text along its way). And then upon exit or after typing enough, it simply alerts "A required resource was" and nothing else (the error message produced is really somewhat incomplete). What's up with this (if Windows MistakeEdition is not the cause)? Thanks, Jukka |

I (unfortunately) have a great deal of experience with Windows, and I have no clue what version of JCreator you're talking about. For all practical purposes, I'm assuming you mean 3.11.x. Well, I hated Windows ME. It was a direct descendant of the first downhill step Windows took - Windows 98. Microsoft knew this, and thus they released Microsoft Windows 98 SE - which was better, but not by much. Windows ME, for all practical purposes, is Windows 98 with a different name on top, and a few internal changes as well - not enough, however, to warrant any real differentiation between it and 98. As a result, Windows ME was almost entirely ignored by developers, and to a certain degree by Microsoft itself, especially after Windows 2000 released, which was much more stable. If something works with 98, chances are it works with ME, though you can't be too sure. Windows 98 was a error-code museum, a clinic in what not to do in an OS. These errors are very common to 98, which I used up until about a year ago. These errors are generally Windows errors, and can be solved by turning off background programs, and even reloading the OS - something I highly recommend, and did myself about once every three months - out of total necessity. However, seeing as how 98/ME is now approximately SEVEN years old, I'd really suggest upgrading. If XP is too expensive for you, I'd direct you to Froogle Windows 2000, as it is widely supported, and is as stable - if not more stable, ironically - than Windows XP (also known as Windows eXPensive). To keep your current/new OS stable, DO NOT install anything that keeps a itself or a little service of itself in memory, or that loads itself at startup. These programs murder stability. Rather than go on, I think I'll go start a thread about how to keep Windows stable, that I and others can reference, rather than me regurgitating things all the time. Anyways, hope that helped, somewhat. Even after 6 years of Windows 98/ME, I still don't know why 90% of it's error messages plague me.

I just happened to have a virtual PC running ME lying around, and I have just tested this and it happens just as you describe it..
actually, it is probably one of the weirdest things I have seen lately (just after that one guy who managed to get his color cartridge in the slot for the black cartridge and vice versa (printer) :o) screenshot: ![]() that error window.. it doesn't look like a windows warning, neither does it look like JCreator is generating the warning ... upon closing JC asks whether you want to save your changes... that dialog is in the same style... concluding: I can hardly believe this is only ME, since 9x is the same as ME (just a little better). Could someone with access to a 9x box check (and confirm) this as well? -------------------- "Many are persistently in pursuit of the way they have chosen; few in pursuit of the goal"

Try using the Windows registry. As this has not happened to me, I can only guess that it is because there is some big problem with your JCreator profile. Doing this, you may have to set everything in JCreator back to default settings, but hopefully it will solve the problem.
1) Go to Windows Run dialog, and type "regedit" 2) In Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xinox Software. 3) Delete all the JCreator data that is present. 4) Close Regedit and start JCreator. That should help solve the issue. In any case, I would definitely suggest as lordSauron did that you get Windows 2000 or XP, as they are markedly more stable and functional than the 98/ME series. |

Thanks for the ideas. I am using JCreator version 3.50.011 currently.
Unfortunately, regedit did not help. A weird point to note is that JCreator sets its version regkey (default) to 3.50.008, even though the actual version is 3.50.011. There is a (small) array of processes running in the background. These are, however, all related to either windows itself, antivirus, firewall or my mouse-keyboard and, as such, are vital for normal operation. I do have the tendency to remove such load-on-startup-programs. I doubt that these are the cause, but I'll give it a try and shutdown all but explorer and systray and then run JCreator. <update>shutting down background processes wont help</update> I am definitely switching to another OS soon enough (as soon as I have the money to upgrade hardware as well), but for the time being, I'll have to stick with ME. The confirmation (save) and error windows that appear really do look a bit "old". Any more ideas? Xinox? - Jukka |

this also happens to the Pro (non-unicode) version of JC.
Tested on a clean windows ME install (only JDK and JCLE/JCPro installed), I have not yet found out why it happens, it really distorts the windows GUI though :x Giving the fact it distorts the windows GUI and remembering another topic about changing the GUI by changing an option in the registry I decided to thrash the given key, this didn't work though :/ Obviously it is not something in the configuration of JCreator, I think this is a bug in JCreator.. I have filed a bug report with Xinox and will keep you posted on any responses I'll get. -------------------- "Many are persistently in pursuit of the way they have chosen; few in pursuit of the goal"

It just hit me (when I tried reading the error message)!
JCreator is looking for a resource found ONLY in Win 2k/XP. Thus, when the thing is missing, JCreator hits some sort of error (wow...) I know Xinox has JCreator v. 2.<something> avaliable for download. I suggest using that until you can get a OS update. From what I can tell, it's nothing within my control. -------------------- Lord Sauron the Great

Well. Tried out LE 3.50.012. No help.
GUI still gets corrupted and now I even receive a ".../jsp.syn file not found" warning on startup. And this jsp.syn file is not actually there as far as I can tell. I redownloaded and reinstalled twice and tried resetting the registrykeys for JCreator, but that did not help either. Xinox? - Jukka |

Hello.
I no longer have winME aka the-buggy-piece-of-s*it. Thank god. I burned the winME cd and switched to winXP pro and now everything works fine. Thanks for your replies. - Jukka |

Glad to know I'm not alone. I'm having the same problem on both Windows Me and Windows 98. (See "duckbill" post # 1.)
See also "Memory Problem, It might be just me, but..." Editing class text within JCreator LE 3.50.011 is swallowing up memory resources and not letting go of it. If I start with 65% resources free, I can launch JCreator LE and drop 10%, expected, and with every subsequent editing of the file I drop another 10% in resources, not expected. Editing of the file means adding a word to the quoted text, or deleting the white space at the beginning of a line and reentering it from a single return off the line above. I have a 8 GB C: drive with 4 GB free, a 2 GB D: drive that is empty, and a 120 GB E: drive with 108 GB free. The processor is a Pentium III at 850 MHz. The memory is 256 MB. The OS is Windows ME. (I know, the latter is the real problem!) ____________ I installed your 3.50.012, and I get this message upon launching: Jcreator has caused an error in JCREATOR.EXE. Jcreator will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer. -------------------- ____________________________
